Trip 2 is in the books and the season is off and running. Yet another dune ripping trip, and to mix things up for a change we threw in an old fashioned Glamis wedding

You never really know what you will see out there.

Numero dos del ano. First trip was a few days prior to Halloween and sadly a bit too windy to aquire
the proper media for a blog post(I changed my mind after looking at the shots again). Epically virgin dunes though which is always nice. Anyway, to the task at hand.

Trip two of the season held brutaly ripped up dunes, new contour HD helmet cam testing, a few super solid meals and a wedding. Yes a wedding in the dunes! No more than a 100 yards from where we camped. Weather could not of been nicer even if the dunes were ripped to pieces. As I fancy myself a photographer I even proffered my services to shoot a few shots of the bride and groom. In hindsight I question my judgement relative to approaching said wedding in moto pants, boots, no shirt and looking a bit crusty. I can only hope that the photo services rendered in some way make up for the transgression. Assuming it was one of course. Never know what you will see in Glamis.

Other than that a few random shots, some of the wedding, 505’s ran strong, camped next to a rail running on alcohol, an oil change or three and the Contour HD helmet cam testing.

Testing the contour HD. Jury still out. Slammed myself a few times on this one. Less time worrying about filming more time riding is advised.

The announcement; Seems great to me, lets all slow down and no dust. No wake zone for the sand seems reasonable. What I really like about it though is the harbinger this particular message represents. Sure summer is ending and that sucks. Yet this painful annual ending has it own silver lining. Namely the emergence of two great gifts bestowed upon man from God; The 09/10 Glamis Dunes Season complimented perfectly by the 09/10 season of Sand Diego Super Chargers Football.

09/10 Season FTW…Let the games begin.

6 Straight days of desert hell; a veritable cornucopia of weather, red bull guys going HUGE at Glamis, and 3 days of Coachella, all to end the season. Fantastic way to go out…

Wednesday April 15th.

The rig gets stored all season at Dunes Edge and Coachella was coming so we had to make the season ending trip. Got out Wednesday morning to the craziest wind I have ever seen at Glamis; it was blowing so hard you could not be outside without goggles, and the wind chill made it freezing. Had to stagger the warrior when we setup camp so it would not blow over on us. Despite the wind there is something about EMPTY and VIRIGN glamis dunes. No tracks anywhere and nobody out there period. Beau had just bought the new KTM 505 so the wind was not going to stop us. Rode a bit on Wednesday the sand was incredible aside from some super soft spots here and there. We both went over the bars a few times. There were some crazy and dodgy formations form all the wind. Definetly had to be super careful. Rode hard and were hoping for better weather the next day. Turns out we were not the only ones.

Red Bull Air Show. I thought we missed the Red Bull show in SD with the planes by going to coachella…turns out we got our own show.

Apparently the Red Bull guys were out there to shoot a commercial and just waiting for the wind to die down so the chopper could get in there. Went for a morning ride on Thursday and we were getting ready to pack up when we saw them. Watched for a bit and took some pics and video. Going to post the pics now and the HD footage after the 6 day desert hangover subsides… The HD footage is sick as you get to see both the skills of the riders and the chopper pilot(he was pulling sick maneuvers). It was a great situation to test the Mark II 5d video features. Threw in a couple of shots of the rig at Coachella for good measure.

After the air show loaded up and raced out of glamis to get the rig ready;unload the toys in palm springs, get the rig detailed, and load the golf cart up(god bless a toy box) to get a good spot for coachella. From one great show with rock stars to another… Hell of a way to end an incredible Glamis season.

Back from another midweek crusade in the holy land. Not many places I would hammer out the three hours out and back for 24hrs of fun. Being a self professed fanatic, it turns out Glamis is one of them.

Osbourne Overlook

Camped at Osbourne and got the dunes just how we like em. Untouched and empty. As is all too typical of camping at Osbourne Overlook, met some interesting folks. Personified in this case by Charles Chandler a photog/paraglider. Paragliding is some seriously sick business. Based on watching take off and landing and how quick and easy they are to setup, I think I need to re-evaluate my glamis in between riding down time. He took a few pics from the air which I am hoping to get my hands on. I will add them to this post if and when I do. Most photos are from the new Canon 5d Mark II. A new Mark II I might add, that was immediately equipped with one of these. Shot some video with it as well and once I figure out how to edit that video without my computer blowing up, I will post that as well. Its pretty sweet as its his whole take off. Specifically my buddy with beer in hand almost getting a hair cut. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is quite as nice as the sand during the week.

Guess what you are about to buy????

If self preservation of your electronic gadgetry is an instinct you possess, I would argue its an invisible shield.

Invisible Shield screen protectors are made by a company called Zagg. Its essentially just a clear plastic shield you put over your electronic gadgets and devices. Its a great idea to do no matter what as they are really cheap to begin with(12 bucks or so). For Glamis however, I would argue that they are mandatory. The sand gets everywhere and all it takes is to drag a single grain across the screen of your brand new digi cam or phone and you will be fried that you didn’t get on of these. There are a number of companies out there that make these things and I have found Zagg to be the best.

they are easy to install

they dont come off unless you want them to

They are great for GPS, cameras, your iphone, or anything else you are going to subject to the sand.

Its originally designed for the military…not the boy scouts or your weekend softball team but the military k. I am such a sucker for that type of BS marketing.

Midweek Osbourne Mission

The sand is so much nicer during the week. If only work didn’t get in the way

This time it didn’t.

The more you ride a bike in Glamis the more you seek out the untouched sand. By the time Fri. gets going the sand is pretty ripped up by the cars so we have been seeking out the midweek sessions.

Decided to take the dog this time and he did pretty well. Even rode in the loud a@# car which was interesting being he is terrified of loud noises. Anyway, wasn’t particularly camera happy this trip. More about ripping and riding. Just got a new Canon G10(thanks GF). Been playing around with it as a point and shoot throw in the camel back camera. The color reproduction is amazing and am thus far pleased with its performance.

As is often the case with Osbourne Overlook the snow birds and Rv’ers roll by and have a look at the dunes. Couple of 40+ year old dudes were camped next to us riding 10 year old two stroke Banshee’s. Ended up putting on a show for the snow birds and everyone else that was watching. At one point a group of quad riders stopped at the dune in front of the overlook. 15 deep at least. 7 of em sat there gawking at the 12 ft reentry airs off the lip these guys were doing …glamis is so rad. The old guys with quads commensurate to their age schooling people. Should of taken more pics as these in no way do justice.

Playing around with the camera wanted to test the video. Nothing serious here(in terms of the jump) but quality is not to bad a for a point and shoot.

Why do I want to camp at Osbourne Overlook?

Glad you asked, let me tell you.

aside from maybe the cement flats its one of the easiest places to get to and set up quick
it has incredible views
its right in the middle of the big dunes
there is plenty of action going on when are chilling out between sessions
its a short drive to the beach store assuming you need to get supplies
cell service always works well
its easy to see from anywhere in the dunes(helps if you are not familiar with the territory)

Downsides

Only downside and or upside depending on how you roll is that Osbourne is clearly marked as a dune observation point on all kinds of maps. As such you get your fair share of snow birds, packs of harley riders
(sadly almost every time we go some guy gets adventurous and lays his down trying to go through the sand that covers the pavement), and overall tourists that are always driving up to get a few pics and to ask you how much horsepower that particular V8 puts out..is that thing fast…boy look at the at engine…in my day we used to come here with jeeps….can I have a ride? etc etc. This, and being that is so small, it can really fill up quickly. Great spot to hit for midweek missions when time is short and you simply want to get down to business time.

Sand Drags 09

Never really taken the big camera to the drags as its always dutsy and I would rather just watch with a beer to be honest. Decided to take the camera this time and snap a few. I was having problems with the focus with all the sand in addition to being in the wrong place to catch a roll over that happened. Anyway, here are a few good ones from the weekend. Sorry to see that guy roll but I hear he is ok physically anyway. Got some good shots of him before he rolled anyway.

God Bless the internet and user generated content. I was taking pictures and this guy was shooting video. Nice edit on this. Make sure you go to you watch in HQ.

So I finally decided to join Vimeo and try it out. The quality of some of the video on that site is crazy good. I didn’t film this hence the crappy shaky quality but a good clip none the less. I think its high time to start shooting more video again despite the video editing pain in the A## that HD presents. Makes my computer want to blow up. So this is a video from last season of my buddy Meelo and his his super car Ls7 albins tranny with a special extra ludicrous speed gear put in. You a a drug smuggler and attempting to bring 73 pounds of Mexican chiba (probably that tied stick stuff) into America all the while averting the authorities what do you do?

I tell you what you do. You watch Traffic like 5 times and then start doing your homework. You get a good disguise, say as an “off-road enthusiast”, you scout the area, you work at night, you do it when its crowded you get some serious James bond type technological devices directly from Q himself and maybe you plan a serious diversion. Or,If you are these clowns you get a Polaris Ranger and go to Glamis.

You have your buddies walk up to a recently constructed border fence and be sure to waste some time looking around fora good spot and that nobody is looking, maybe smoke some cigarette’s and talk about how nice the weather is while you wait for your buddy that is late again on the other side. Then you throw the bales of weed over to your buddy cleverly concealed in disguise who drives right back to his trailor and then sits there awhile. Then you get arrested. Nice work morons. Probably shouldnt mess with the border patrol.

The bottom line.

District 5 Supervisor Wally Leimgruber has gone to bat for keeping the trash service running. Essentially what he has done is put in writing that they oppose the removal of the trash bins and thus formally let the BLM know. In his words “memorialize” the idea in writing. I would imagine that the BLM probably has nothing but respect for the imperial county board of supervisors(yeah right!), the ones that do the budget anyway, so this will no doubt accomplish nothing. When I spoke to Wally on the phone he let me know the only other thing we can do to help him out is contact the senators and even the local congressman. While I think all of it is a step in the right direction I myself am far too cynical to waste my time contacting them especially after the CA legislature today attempted to ILLEGALLY raise taxes.

On a side note the trash service that has the contract has been quoted in the paper saying that he could keep his price fixed for the next 5 years. Seems he is only willing to do so for another year. Moreover, all comments that I have been reading in the local press point to local operators wanting a crack at the service. Makes me think that a little competition in there and the price of the service could be significantly cut from the 400k a year it costs now. One comment in particular that I read broke it down to costing $1095 per day when the area is only really used 9 months a year and only really heavily on 15 weekends or so. A grand a day does seem pretty ridiculous to me.

According to IVP this is the trash total after a long Thanksgiving Weekend. The chatter out there continues to ratchet up as we get closer to the dumpsters being pulled. The dune detractors are sharpening their knives in anticipation of the piles of trash expose photos they will take. A solution is necessary.

Here at Dunefast we maintain a few points on this issue.

1. Until the BLM goes transparent on its financial’s (which will never happen) then this is just another BS issue of government taking the money we as duners pay in fees, and diverting it elsewhere. Until I see numbers, as if I had too to begin with, then the BLM is screwing us on this. NO different then the state of CA being bankrupt; all they say is that they need more funding and that’s the solution to the problem. Its never about financial transparency nor accountability.

2. Assuming the trash does stop with no solution in place, trash will pile up. The place it will pile up more than anywhere else is at the bottom of olds. This is, and will be, primarily due to the local poluation who are NOT DUNERS, and come just to get wasted and start a fire. Not saying they dont have the right mind you, just saying that the duning community loves what we have and would never screw it up. There is a love and a respect for Glamis that only a duner really has and only a duner can really understand. Its not something achieved through just an 18pack and a bonfire. As soon as the cans are gone the detractors of the dunes and environmentalist wacko’s are going to come take their photos and publish them in the paper in attempts to advance their agenda which will stop an nothing bull full dune closure.

3.The Solution, at least the one we are advocating, is to say we need to raise fees…ok fine. Lets raise them then but ONLY ONCE! Lets figure what it costs to do so…say a 10 dollar per permit fee increase or even 20, 30, 40. Hauling trash out is a pain in the A#@ and I will certainly pay not to have to do it, but that money should then be in a separate TRANSPARENT ACCOUNT. An account just for trash and an account that the BLM CANNOT TOUCH. The current trash provider has already publicly stated

“I would do it for the price I am doing it for now forever,” said Mission Disposal owner Larry O’Harra. “I could hold my price where it is now for the next five years.”

So lets lock the fee increase in and let Larry do his thing. If there is a surplus it stays in the account. If a shortfall then fees increase the next year.

The IVP article linked to above(click ratchet up) states that some are lobbying U.S. Rep. Bob Filner for government funding. I think that would be a great thing if it happened although its a band aid rather than a solution to the problem. The ASA has been, and will continue to be the tip of the spear on this. If you feel compelled to give or get involved then do it through them. Yet it can’t hurt for all of us to contact the congressman as well. His contact info is below.

Keep in mind he is one of the most liberal in congress and assuming he has a couple of extra bucks in pork money lying around from depriving our troops of support or paying for haircuts he still wont help us. While its clear I have no future in diplomacy… nor art, maybe you do. His contact info is below.

DUI arrests in the dunes

I recently read an article in the Yuma sun that was talking about the dunes over Thanksgiving weekend.
For one reason or another (most likely the cold bud light I had in my hand at the time I was reading it)
one particular statistic stood out.

“He added there were 42 arrests made in the dunes, including 13 people arrested for operating off-roading vehicles while intoxicated, he said. The number of arrests were down from a year ago, he said.”

What struck me was the amount of DUI arrests made over the weekend. Either high or low depending on how you look at it; assuming you are a dune detractor then its very high and DANGEROUS, or, if an advocate normal to low. Being an advocate I felt it was low and decided to investigate. Keep in mind those that want to close the dunes down love citing the reasons why we should close em, chief among them always seems to be boozed up lunatics(IVP article) driving around 500hp death machines. EVERYTIME I read one of these articles a fellow duner always comments making a vague reference to the stats based on population at the dunes and how it compares to comprable demo’s. Therefore I felt it appropriate to investigate the demographics on the matter as having a blog makes me a fully accredited member of the media:} Personified in this case by someone who pretends to be able to identify bullshit when he smells it and knows how to use google. I found the following.

FINDINGS

First let it be known that the population of Glamis over the Thanksgiving holiday is 172,000 according to the IVP.

Imperial County has a estimated population of 160, 301 with 1181 DUI’s per year (2005 statistic via 2007 Annual report of the California DUI management information system).
So following these numbers we are talking about 3.2 DUI’s per day.

So following this logic…
a population of 172,000 would be allotted around 3.5 DUI’s per day given the mild increase in pop and assuming its following imperial county numbers.

Thanksgiving Weekend is conservatively 5 days. Which would mean 3.5 per day. So 17.5 over the entire holiday weekend.
We had 14.

I am not a statistician but either is the BLM of the IVP for that matter. Based on these numbers its clear that the Glamis population GETS LESS DUI’s PER DAY then the entire IMPREIAL COUNTY.
A pretty amazing statistic considering cars on city streets vs sand cars bikes, rhino’s, quads, jeeps, trucks, three wheelers, all on uneven terrain with no street signs, no traffic cameras, and little enforcement.Popular Posts:
